We won Best Newcomer in the Great British Pub Awards for the South East and London region! This is a huge achievement for a pub that only opened it’s doors under new ownership a year ago. It was the most competitive category to be in, and so although not crowned overall winner to win such a large region is victory in itself. We attended the awards ceremony a few weeks ago at the Hilton in Park Lane and travelled up altogether to spend a fun evening drinking, talking and dancing.
The theme of the night was the 80’s; a decade that some of us could remember more than others given the age spread on our table. It was very well organised with great pre-made cocktails on the table on arrival, an 80’s themed pop bingo session which was a lot of fun and then the food and the awards ceremony itself. It was good to see such a vibrant sector of the economy, and one which has struggled in recent years in such fine form. The evening was finished off with an 80’s disco and some late night dancing, needless to say I was on my way home to bed, being one in the party who remembered the 80’s vividly and who is consequently a little old to relive it on the dance floor!
A few nights a later we were on our way to the RAC in Piccadilly to see if we had made it off the shortlist of the Food & Travel Awards onto the winners podium. Rubbing shoulders with Michael Roux junior ad some very well dressed people the evening looked promising. The 3 course meal prepared by last year’s winning chefs, Jason Atherton to name one, was very good. There was copious amounts of wine served and a great atmosphere all round.
We didn’t win L but we did incredibly well to make it that far in such glittering company – there’s always next year! Anyway if there is a term “award fatigue” we have it so now it’s time to head back to the pub and work on some more awards for next year.
